Grizzly Coast (Alannah Kavanagh) has been sharpening her songwriting, growing her loyal following, and tightening her live show in Toronto’s vibrant live music scene, supporting acts like Fast Romantics and Begonia. Her music successfully blends dreamy guitar rock sensibilities with a trademark thoughtful lyricism.

New single, “Washed,” is a powerful rallying cry against indifference and stagnancy, urging listeners to take control of their lives and reject passivity. Born from a spontaneous and collaborative jam session between Alannah and her husband, Kyle, the track captures the essence of embracing action. The song’s message is a reminder to confront apathy and take control of your life.

Grizzly Coast‘s upcoming LP, Staying Power, – due in the fall of 2024 – is an album that captures the essence of commitment, uncertainty, and the challenges of transition. Written between January 2020 and spring 2023, these songs reflect the pivotal period of Alannah‘s life from ages 25 to 28, a time filled with crucial decisions and transformative experiences. This collection of tracks delves into the journey of taking leaps of faith, developing self-trust, and embracing commitment, all while navigating the uncertainties that come with it.

Piece of music: Rachel — Dante Decaro

I always felt like this song is an undiscovered gem, and I just confirmed it only has around 2K streams on Spotify. It feels like a nice secret I have, and everyone I’ve shown it to over the years has loved it as I do. I went to highschool in the Cowichan Valley of B.C., and this sentimental song reminds me of being a teenager there, with its references to the beauty of Vancouver and the Gulf Islands. On an emotional level, I’ve related heavily over the years to his lyrics about feeling ambivalent towards love and wondering if you’ve made the right choices in life. The instrumentation is somehow both hopeful and solemn, definitely worth a listen!

One visual: Dan Climan — This unnamed painting

I love the work of Dan Climan. Everything he paints tells an interesting story. This particular painting makes me think about summer days at the beach. Driving there with your parents. Making memories as a family. Not realizing that you’re living the days you will look back on fondly.

Type of Tea: Lavender Basil Iced Tea.

Why: In the summer I love to experiment with iced tea combinations to brew at home. Lavender tea from Forest Glen Herb Farm and basil from my backyard — it doesn’t miss. So refreshing, while also being both floral and herbaceous.
