EARL GREY TEA

Ten minute tea with Afternoon Tea. Spend ten minutes with Afternoon Tea. In the time it takes to boil one kettle, and let one cup of tea steep, we will have your daily art + music fix covered. Take your afternoon tea break with our Afternoon Tea curators.

Today’s tea + soundtrack + visuals curated by Owen Marchildon.

Owen Marchildon is a songwriter and guitarist who has been part of the Toronto music scene since 2002. Owen‘s creative output has been prolific, producing volumes of his own music independently since 2005. 10 full length albums, one EP and several singles under four different monikers: Purple Hill, Rough Skeletons, Marchildon! and High Wasted.

2024 will see Owen Marchildon pulling back the veil of all his previous monikers and releasing new music under his own name. The first single, “Heavy Dreams,” is a jangle pop love letter, a musical marriage of hook driven guitars, and the silvery sentiments of Big Star. Longtime bandmates and collaborators, Jordan Bruce and Brent Hough, spread out the sound, complimenting the style, imagination and fabric of Owen‘s songwriting.

Stream + share “Heavy Dreamsnow:

Owen explains the intimate story behind his first single under his own name: There was a time in my life when nothing was more beautiful to me than a Big Star song. You could say I was very much alone with music. Maybe not the healthiest choice. That all changed when I met Kaitlin. I had finally found my sounding board, my purveyor of all things positive. This is a love song for my best friend. Written after our wedding day, all the moments leading up to it, and knowing that I was no longer alone.

EARL GREY TEA

I’m currently revisiting my love for earl grey tea. My nana Doreen introduced it to me when I was a little kid. I spent a lot of time with her at her house in the country. The house was always filled with the scent of freshly baked goods and heavily steeped earl grey tea. We would chat, and drink the tea black, and munch on these delicious chocolate covered coconut squares she called “nana bars.” Sometimes she’d play the organ for me in the living room, or talk endlessly about her love for birds and nature,  while I sipped away and wondered about where my life would take me. Like the tea, my grandmother was a captivating, invigorating, and uplifting person to be around, and she always gave the impression that anything was possible just by the way she moved through her space. So when I drink earl grey tea, I’m reminded that it’s the simple things in life that bring the magic.

SONG- HORSE BY MAJESTY CRUSH

I just received the new Majesty Crush compilation in the mail from Numero Group. I can’t seem to get enough of the song Horse! It showcases the bands mastery of atmosphere, weaving intricate melodies and swirling guitars into a tapestry of sonic bliss. The song unfolds in front of me like a vivid dream, inviting me to loose myself in its haunting beauty, and introspective lyricism.

ART- ALBUM COVER FOR THE CLEAN ANTHOLOGY BY HAMISH KILGOUR

I really admire Hamish Kilgours artwork for The Clean Anthology. The artwork reflects the bands do it yourself aesthetic, their straightforward, idiosyncratic approach to music making, and their focus on substance over style.
